What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and Why Your UAE Business Needs It Now

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation, is the practice of making your content more likely to appear in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Here is what UAE businesses need to know in 2026 — including a practical 20-point checklist.

Essay01
GEO

When someone asks ChatGPT “who is a good brand strategist in Dubai?” or searches Perplexity for “best marketing consultant fees UAE,” the answer they get doesn’t come from a ranking algorithm sorting web pages by relevance. It comes from a large language model that has read, processed, and synthesised content from across the web ; and then composed a response that cites, summarises, or paraphrases what it found.

If your website isn’t structured to be read and cited by these AI systems, it doesn’t exist in those answers. You’re invisible to a rapidly growing segment of how people now find professional services, business information, and consultants in the UAE.

This is what Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) addresses ; and in 2026, it’s no longer optional.

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring, formatting, and signalling your content so that AI-powered search engines and language model-based assistants are more likely to read, cite, summarise, and surface it in generated responses.

The “generative engines” it refers to include:

  • ChatGPT with Search (OpenAI) ; now default in ChatGPT, draws on Bing index and live web search
  • Google AI Overviews ; the AI-generated summaries that appear above organic results in Google Search
  • Perplexity AI ; a search engine that generates cited answers from live web sources
  • Gemini (Google) ; Google’s AI assistant, integrated into Search and Workspace
  • Microsoft Copilot ; uses Bing web index to generate contextual answers in enterprise tools

These platforms collectively handle billions of queries per month. In the UAE, adoption has been particularly fast: by early 2026, 70.1% of UAE workplaces reported active AI tool use ; more than four times the global average of 17.8%.

GEO vs SEO: what’s the difference?

Traditional SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) improves your ranking on Google’s blue-link results page. You optimise title tags, build backlinks, publish keyword-rich content, and earn a spot in the organic listings when someone searches.

GEO is about a different outcome: being quoted or summarised by an AI engine in a generated response, not just listed in links.

The distinction matters because:

In SEO: A user searches, sees a list of links, clicks your link, reads your page.

In GEO: A user asks a question, an AI engine generates an answer, your content is cited or summarised in that answer, the user may or may not click through to your site.

The click-through may be secondary. What matters is whether your expertise, your name, or your content appears in the generated answer at all. If it does, you are the reference the AI cites. If it doesn’t, your competitor is.

Do you need both GEO and SEO?

Yes ; and for the foreseeable future, Google’s traditional search results remain the dominant source of web traffic globally. SEO is not dead; it remains the foundation of discoverability for most queries.

But GEO is the layer that’s growing fastest, particularly for informational and research-oriented queries, comparison and evaluation queries, professional services discovery, and definition and explanation queries. These are exactly the queries that generate leads for consultants, agencies, and professional services firms in the UAE.

How AI engines decide what to cite

AI search engines don’t rank websites the way Google does. They don’t use a PageRank-style algorithm. They select sources based on a combination of:

1. Content comprehensiveness. Does the page actually answer the question being asked, thoroughly, in one place? AI engines prefer sources that don’t require the user to read multiple pages to get a complete picture. Short, thin content ; under 500 words on a topic ; is routinely skipped.

2. Clear, extractable structure. AI engines are much better at citing content that is structured for extraction: clear headings (H2, H3), short paragraphs, defined terms, numbered lists, FAQ sections. A wall of prose is harder to parse and summarise than a well-organised article.

3. Factual specificity. Content that includes concrete statistics, specific figures, named sources, and dates is more likely to be cited. “Many businesses in the UAE use AI” is not citable. “70.1% of UAE workplaces reported AI tool use by early 2026” is citable.

4. Authorship and E-E-A-T signals. Google’s AI Overviews in particular draw heavily on Google’s E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust). Content attributed to a named expert with verifiable credentials is weighted more heavily than anonymous content.

5. Schema markup. Structured data ; particularly FAQ schema, Speakable schema, Person schema, and Article schema ; explicitly signals to AI systems what your content is about, who wrote it, and which parts are suitable for extraction and citation.

The GEO checklist for UAE businesses

Here’s a practical checklist you can run against any page on your site:

Content
✓ Does this page answer a specific, fully-formed question in the first 200 words?
✓ Is the page 1,200+ words for informational topics?
✓ Are there concrete statistics, named data sources, and specific figures?
✓ Is there a FAQ section at the bottom addressing related questions?
✓ Is the content written for a human, not keyword-stuffed for a bot?

Structure
✓ Does the page have a clear H1, followed by logical H2 and H3 sections?
✓ Are key definitions set apart clearly (e.g., “What is X?” as a heading)?
✓ Are lists used where appropriate (numbered processes, bulleted comparisons)?
✓ Is the author identified clearly, with a bio and credentials?

Technical signals
✓ Is FAQ schema implemented on pages with Q&A sections?
✓ Is Speakable schema implemented, pointing AI engines to the most citable sections?
✓ Is Article schema on blog posts, with author, datePublished, and description fields?
✓ Is Person schema on the homepage, with name, jobTitle, knowsAbout, and LinkedIn link?
✓ Does robots.txt allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended?

UAE-specific GEO considerations

Arabic content. AI engines trained on English-heavy datasets perform better with English content for now. But Gemini and GPT-4o have strong Arabic capabilities, and queries in Arabic from UAE users are growing. If your audience includes Arabic speakers, publishing key pages in Arabic or bilingual format will become increasingly important for GEO by 2027.

UAE government sources are high-credibility signals. Citing UAE government data, TDRA publications, or national AI strategy documents in your content signals to AI engines that you are knowledgeable about the UAE context specifically ; not just recycling global content for a local audience.

Local specificity outranks generic global content. “Marketing consultant fees” is a competitive global topic. “Marketing consultant fees in Dubai” is less competitive and far more likely to appear in an AI-generated answer when someone in the UAE asks the question. Localisation is a GEO advantage, not just a user experience consideration.

Perplexity and ChatGPT are widely used in the UAE professional market. UAE enterprise and professional services buyers are early AI adopters. The person searching for a brand strategist in Dubai is more likely than average to be using AI search tools for their research.

What GEO looks like in practice

Here’s a concrete example of how GEO works.

If someone asks Perplexity: “What should I look for when hiring a brand strategist in Dubai?” ; Perplexity generates an answer by searching the live web for relevant content. If a page on martinalva.com exists titled “How to Choose a Brand Strategist in Dubai: 7 Questions to Ask,” structured with clear H2 sections, a specific FAQ at the bottom, Person and Article schema, and 1,500+ words of specific, expert content ; that page is a strong candidate to be cited in the answer.

If the same query turns up only agency landing pages with 200-word “we are a Dubai branding agency” paragraphs, Perplexity synthesises a generic answer from scattered sources. Nobody wins clearly.

The goal of GEO is to be the source that gets cited.

Where most UAE businesses go wrong with GEO

Publishing for volume, not depth. Short posts don’t get cited. A blog with 20 posts of 300-400 words each is invisible to AI engines. Three posts of 2,000 words each, well-structured and specifically authoritative, will outperform that entire archive.

Treating GEO as separate from SEO. The foundations overlap significantly: clear content, correct schema, good site structure, credible authorship. GEO-friendly content tends to rank better in traditional search too. You don’t need a separate GEO strategy ; you need an integrated content strategy that satisfies both.

Ignoring schema markup. Most UAE business websites have no structured data at all. FAQ schema alone can dramatically improve the likelihood that AI engines extract and cite your content’s Q&A sections.

No named author. Anonymously-authored pages are less likely to be cited by AI engines than pages clearly attributed to a named, verifiable expert. This is the “E” in E-E-A-T ; Experience. An AI engine cannot assess the experience of “The Marketing Team.”

How to start with GEO this week

If you want to make your content more GEO-friendly without a full site overhaul, start here:

  1. Pick your three most important informational pages and rewrite or expand them to 1,200+ words with clear H2 structure.
  2. Add a FAQ section to each post. Five to eight questions and answers, covering related questions someone might ask after reading the main content. Mark these up with FAQ schema.
  3. Make sure your author bio is on every post. Name, credentials, LinkedIn link, photo. This alone is a meaningful E-E-A-T signal.
  4. Install FAQ schema and Article schema if they’re not already in place. Yoast SEO Premium handles this automatically; Rank Math also supports it.
  5. Audit your robots.txt. Confirm it doesn’t block AI crawlers. Add explicit Allow lines for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, anthropic-ai, and Google-Extended.
  6. Add statistics and sources to your content. For every claim you make, ask: can this be cited? Add a data point, name the source, include the year.

The bottom line

GEO isn’t a separate discipline from good content marketing ; it’s what good content marketing looks like now that AI engines are part of how people search. The businesses and consultants who benefit most from GEO in the UAE will be the ones who publish comprehensive, clearly structured, expert-attributed content that genuinely answers the questions their audience is asking.

The window to get ahead of this is open right now. Most UAE businesses haven’t started thinking about GEO. The ones who build this foundation in 2026 will have a significant lead in AI-driven discoverability by 2027.

FAQ: Generative Engine Optimisation for UAE Businesses

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO improves your position in Google’s traditional blue-link search results. GEO makes your content more likely to be cited or summarised in AI-generated answers from platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Traditional SEO remains the primary driver of web traffic for most businesses. GEO is an additional layer, particularly important for informational, research, and professional services queries.

How do I know if my content is GEO-optimised?
Run through the checklist in this post. Key signals: content is 1,200+ words, has clear H2/H3 structure, includes a FAQ section with FAQ schema markup, is attributed to a named author with credentials, and cites specific statistics with named sources.

Does robots.txt affect AI crawlers?
Yes. AI crawlers like GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), and PerplexityBot respect robots.txt disallow rules. If your robots.txt blocks these crawlers, your content cannot be indexed by those AI engines.

Which schema types matter most for GEO?
FAQ schema, Speakable schema, Article schema, and Person schema are the highest-impact structured data types for GEO. These explicitly signal to AI systems what your content is about and which sections are suitable for extraction and citation.

Do I need to write in Arabic to rank in UAE AI search?
Not yet for most professional services queries, which are predominantly in English in the UAE market. However, Arabic-language GEO will become more important by 2027 as Arabic language model capabilities improve.
